How it is calculated
History and fun facts
The first lists were stock lists
The oldest writing from Mesopotamia, more than 5,000 years old, consists mostly of lists. On clay tablets scribes recorded how much grain, livestock and beer there was.
So counting and adding up was one of the first reasons to write. A shopping list is a modern version of that.
Building accounts in the Middle Ages
For large buildings, such as cathedrals and castles, clerks recorded how much stone, timber, lime and iron was bought. Many of those accounts have survived.
Thanks to them, historians often know exactly how many cartloads of stone a tower needed and what the workers earned.
The bill of quantities
Later the profession of quantity surveyor appeared. A quantity surveyor makes a list of all materials and amounts for a building before construction starts.
Such a document is called a bill of quantities. The idea is the same as here: count first, then gather, then build.
Stacks and shulker boxes
In Minecraft most blocks stack up to 64 in one slot. A chest has 27 slots and a double chest has 54.
Shulker boxes arrived in Minecraft 1.11, at the end of 2016. They keep their contents when you pick them up. With them you can carry 27 stacks at once. For large builds they have become essential.
Why counting first helps
When you build in survival, you do not want to run out of blocks halfway. With a list you know in advance how much stone to mine or how much wood to chop.
Builders on servers also share such lists with their team. That way everyone knows what still needs to be gathered.
Did you know?
- In Minecraft a stack is 64 pieces for most blocks.
- Ender pearls, eggs and snowballs only stack up to 16.
- A shulker box has 27 slots, just like a normal chest.
- A full shulker box of blocks holds 1,728 blocks.
- Shulker boxes have been in Minecraft since version 1.11 from 2016.
- The oldest clay tablets with lists come from the city of Uruk in Mesopotamia.
About this tool
The Shopping list adds up everything you put on your list in the MCHistoryBuilder tools. That way you see at a glance how many blocks, stacks and shulker boxes you need to gather for your whole build.
You fill the list from a tool, such as the circle planner, the tower roof planner or the wall texture mixer. Make a design there and press Add to my list at the bottom. The design then shows up here, with the amounts. You can add as many designs as you like.
Building something more than once, such as four identical towers? Raise the number of times. Click the name of a design to open it again in its tool. Items with the same name are added together.
The Everything together table shows the amount, stacks and shulker boxes for each item. With Copy list you can paste it into a chat or a note. The list is only stored in your own browser, nothing is sent anywhere.
This makes a Minecraft materials list for a castle, village or cathedral much easier to manage.
Frequently asked questions
How do I put a design on my list?
Open a tool, make your design and press Add to my list at the bottom. The design then appears here with all the amounts. You can go straight on to the next design.
How is the number of shulker boxes calculated?
A shulker box has 27 slots and each slot holds one stack. Even half a stack takes a whole slot. The list adds up the slots of all items, divides by 27 and rounds up.
Is the count right for items that stack to 16?
The list counts 64 per stack. A few things, such as signs and eggs, only stack to 16. The list does not count those separately. For normal building blocks, stairs and slabs it is correct.
Is my list saved?
Yes, in your own browser. If you clear your browser data or use another browser, the list is gone. Use Copy list to keep it somewhere else.
How do I remove a design from the list?
Each design has its own button to remove it. With Clear list you remove everything at once. That cannot be undone.
How many blocks fit in a shulker box?
27 slots of 64 makes 1,728 blocks. A double chest full of shulker boxes holds 54 of them, which is over 93,000 blocks.
