Build tips
- Place the two anchor points first, at the same height, with exactly as many blocks of space between them as the length. Then stretch a line of temporary blocks at anchor height.
- Count down from that line. Height −3 means the deck is 3 blocks lower than the top of the anchors.
- Build a half step (½) with a bottom slab. It sits half a block lower than a full block in the same spot.
- Start on both sides at once and work towards the middle. The bridge is symmetrical, so the right half is the mirror image of the left.
- A fence on a slab floats half a block above the deck. If you do not want that, use walls or leave out the fences on the slab columns.
- Hang lanterns or chains from the posts for a real rope bridge. The heavier the deck, the more sag looks realistic.

History and fun facts
Rope bridges in the mountains
Suspension bridges are very old. In the mountains of South America, the Himalayas and Southeast Asia, people stretched ropes across a gorge or river. You walked on a deck of planks or woven grass and held on to the side ropes.
The Inca had a large network of roads with rope bridges. The Q'eswachaka bridge in Peru is still rewoven from grass every year by the nearby villages. The work takes a few days and is a celebration.
Why a bridge sags
A rope or chain can only pull, not push. When you hang it between two points, it sags in the middle. That shape is called a catenary. The tighter you pull the rope, the smaller the sag, but the harder the anchors must pull.
That is why the anchors are the most important part. On a rope bridge, the ropes are tied to rocks, trees or heavy stone posts.
Catenary or parabola?
In the 17th century, Galileo Galilei thought that a hanging chain forms a parabola. In 1691, Christiaan Huygens, Gottfried Leibniz and Johann Bernoulli showed that it is a different curve: the catenary.
Still, the parabola is not wrong. When a heavy, flat deck hangs from the cables, as on a large suspension bridge, the cables take almost the shape of a parabola. That is why this tool lets you choose between a catenary and a parabola. With a small sag, they look very much alike.
From rope to steel cable
In the 19th century, iron chains and later steel cables arrived. With them, bridges could span hundreds of metres. Well-known examples are the Brooklyn Bridge in New York (1883) and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco (1937).
On those bridges, the deck hangs straight below the cables. In Minecraft you usually build a simple rope bridge instead: the deck itself sags, like a walkway in a jungle or between two mountain peaks.
Where you can still see them
The Capilano Suspension Bridge near Vancouver (since 1889) and the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge in Northern Ireland are popular sights. Nepal has many steel footbridges that hang across deep valleys.
You also see them often in films and games, as an exciting crossing above a drop. In Minecraft they fit well with jungle temples, mountain villages and tree houses.
Did you know?
- The word catenary comes from the Latin catena, which means chain.
- The Q'eswachaka bridge in Peru has been rewoven from grass every year for centuries.
- The Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937 and is painted in a colour called International Orange.
- An upside-down catenary is the strongest shape for an arch. The Gateway Arch in St. Louis has this shape.
- The Capilano Suspension Bridge near Vancouver was built in 1889, first from rope and cedar wood.
About this tool
With the Rope bridge planner you build a bridge in Minecraft that sags nicely between two points. You choose the length, how far the middle hangs down and how wide the deck is. The tool calculates the deck height for every column.
You choose between two shapes: a catenary, like a loose rope bridge, or a parabola, like a bridge with a heavy deck. Slabs give you half steps, so the curve becomes much smoother. If you only want full blocks, that works too. Fences along the sides and posts for the ropes can be turned on with one choice.
The side view shows the bridge with the exact curve and the height of the anchors. The table lists the height, the step and whether you place a block or a slab for every column. You can also see the bridge in 3D and as a layer plan. The tool counts deck blocks, slabs, fences and post blocks. Click a column once you have built it.
Do you use WorldEdit or Litematica? Download the bridge as a .schem file and paste it into your world. With the block palette you choose the wood yourself. That way you quickly build a Minecraft rope bridge or suspension bridge across a gorge, a river or between two tree houses. Looking for a stone arch bridge or a drawbridge? Go to Bridges.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a suspension bridge in Minecraft?
First place two anchor points at the same height, with exactly as many blocks between them as the length. Stretch a line of temporary blocks at anchor height. Then count down for each column: the tool tells you how many blocks lower the deck goes. Start at both ends and work toward the middle; the bridge is symmetrical.
What is the difference between catenary and parabola?
A catenary is the shape of a freely hanging rope. You get a parabola when a heavy, flat deck hangs from the cables. With a small sag you hardly see a difference. With a deep sag, the catenary is a bit steeper near the ends.
How much should my bridge sag?
A sag of about one tenth of the length looks natural. A 30-block bridge then sags about 3 blocks. More sag fits a shaky rope bridge in the jungle, less fits a tight bridge of iron or stone.
How do I build a half step?
You build a half step (½ in the table) with a bottom slab. It sits half a block lower than a full block in that spot. This makes the curve of the deck much smoother than with full blocks only.
Why do my fences float above the deck?
A fence on a slab stands half a block above the deck, because the slab is lower. If you do not want this, use walls instead or leave out the fences on the slab columns. You can also turn the fences off completely in the tool.
Does this work in Bedrock too?
Yes. The column table and the layer plan work in every edition. Slabs, fences and chains exist in Bedrock too. The .schem file is for Java Edition with WorldEdit or Litematica. The anchors are not in the file; you build those yourself.
