Country houses and palaces
Build a country house or palace the way they were built in Europe before 1900: a manor with a stair tower, a moated house, a château on the Loire, a Baroque palace with a courtyard of honour, a Palladian villa, a Dutch country estate or a cortijo, pazo, masia or bastide. Add wings, corner towers, a portico, a dome and a moat, with a coach house, orangery, tea pavilion, dovecote, chapel and a drive. For the garden there is Historic gardens.
Point at a block for the explanation. Click a block to mark it as placed. The side view shows the section at the chosen column, Layer shows the chosen layer from above.

A number is the count of blocks of that part in that layer, in the colour of the part. Click a layer to see it from above.
Build tips
- A country house lay in the middle of its land: with an avenue leading to it, a garden behind it and outbuildings for the horses, the carriages and the harvest.
- Glass in windows is always 1 block thick. In a thick wall the rest of the opening stays air.

History and fun facts
Manor houses of the Netherlands
In Overijssel and Drenthe a havezate was a noble house that gave its owner the right to a seat in the Ridderschap, the noble government of the province. They were modest brick houses, often with a moat, a gatehouse and a stair tower.
In Friesland such houses are called states. Of the many states that once stood there, only a few are left, such as Martenastate in Koudum.
Moated houses in Westphalia
The flat Münsterland has little natural protection. That is why the nobles built houses on islands in moats there. More than a hundred of them still stand. Burg Vischering was founded in 1271 and still lies in the middle of the water.
Schloss Nordkirchen was built from 1703 to 1734 in brick with sandstone. It is called the Westphalian Versailles.
The châteaux of the Loire
Chambord was built from 1519 to 1547 for King Francis I, as a hunting lodge. It has round corner towers, a roof full of turrets and chimneys and a famous double spiral staircase, on which two people never meet.
Chenonceau, from 1514 to 1522, stands by the river Cher. In the 16th century a long gallery on arches over the water was added.
Baroque palaces
Vaux-le-Vicomte was built from 1658 to 1661 for the minister Nicolas Fouquet, with a dome in the middle and a large garden by André Le Nôtre. King Louis XIV was so jealous that he had Fouquet arrested in 1661. Then he had the same designers build Versailles.
Het Loo Palace was built from 1684 for the stadtholder William III, with wings around a courtyard of honour and a Baroque garden behind it.
Palladio and his villas
The Italian architect Andrea Palladio lived from 1508 to 1580. He built villas near Venice that look like temples: with columned porticoes, pediments and strict symmetry. Villa La Rotonda near Vicenza, begun around 1567, has a portico on all four sides and a dome in the middle.
In 1570 his book on architecture appeared. Because of it his style was copied everywhere, from English country houses to Trompenburgh in 's-Graveland, which got a domed hall around 1680.
Country estates on the Vecht
In the 17th and 18th centuries rich Amsterdam merchants built country estates along the river Vecht. They lived there in summer, away from the busy town. They travelled there by towed barge over the water.
By the water there was often a tea pavilion: a small building to drink tea and watch the passing boats. Well-known estates are Goudestein in Maarssen and Beeckestijn in Velsen.
Country houses in Spain and southern France
A cortijo is a large farm estate in Andalusia, built around a courtyard, with white walls and tiled roofs. In Galicia stand pazos: granite manor houses with a tower, a chapel, a dovecote and a hórreo, a granary on stilts. Pazo de Oca is called the Galician Versailles.
A masia is a sturdy stone farmhouse in Catalonia. In Provence people built bastides in the 17th and 18th centuries: ochre country houses with shutters and often a dovecote.
Did you know?
- Chambord has 426 rooms, 77 staircases and 282 fireplaces.
- In France before the Revolution of 1789 only the nobility was allowed to have a dovecote.
- In an orangery orange and lemon trees spent the winter in large tubs. In summer they were wheeled outside.
- Fouquet gave a big party for the king at Vaux-le-Vicomte in August 1661. A few weeks later he was arrested.
- Along the Vecht many tea pavilions still stand by the water, sometimes without the country house they belonged to.
About this tool
With this Minecraft country house generator you build a country house or palace like the ones that stood in Europe before 1900. You choose from ten kinds: a manor house, a moated house, a Renaissance château on the Loire, a Baroque palace with a courtyard of honour, a Palladian villa, a Dutch country estate, a cortijo, a pazo, a masia or a bastide.
You set the number of bays, the window width, the storeys, the depth and a plinth with steps. The roof is a hip roof, gable roof, tall steep roof, mansard roof or flat roof with a balustrade, with dormers, chimneys and a cornice. The front gets shutters, a central projection with a pediment, a columned portico on one or four sides and a dome.
Wings form a courtyard of honour or a closed courtyard. Corner towers are round, square or octagonal, or you choose one tower with battlements or a stair tower. Around it come a moat with a bridge, a coach house, a chapel, an orangery, a dovecote, a tea pavilion and a drive with trees. Eighteen examples help you start, such as Chambord, Vaux-le-Vicomte, Het Loo, Villa La Rotonda, Burg Vischering and Goudestein.
The tool counts the blocks per kind, with a build plan per layer, a 3D preview and a .schem download for WorldEdit and Litematica. This way you build a country house in Minecraft with everything around it. For the garden there is Historic gardens, for an orchard Orchards.
Frequently asked questions
How big should a country house be in Minecraft?
A manor or country estate is 5 to 7 bays wide and 2 storeys high: about 22 to 30 blocks wide. A palace like Het Loo or Vaux-le-Vicomte with wings easily becomes 50 to 60 blocks wide and long. Start small and only add wings when the main building looks right.
How do I make green shutters?
Shutters are open trapdoors beside the windows. Choose Green under Wood: those are trapdoors of warped wood from the Nether. For red shutters choose mangrove, for light ones birch.
How do I build a columned portico?
Set Columned portico to Front. The portico is 3 deep, with quartz pillars on every other block and a low pediment above: every layer two blocks narrower, with a slab and a stair. With Four sides you get a villa like La Rotonda.
Do the trees of the drive stay?
Yes. The leaves in the download are persistent, so they do not decay, not even if you remove the trunk. The gravel and the grass are not counted and only go into the download when you switch on Include ground and gravel.
How many blocks do I need?
It is shown at the top under Total. A country estate with a coach house is 3,000 to 4,000 blocks, a palace with wings 10,000 or more. Add the house to your shopping list to see everything per kind of block.
Can I build this in Bedrock?
Yes. The front view and the build plan per layer work in every version. The .schem file is for Java Edition with WorldEdit or Litematica.
