Farms
A library of farm buildings to build layer by layer: Dutch long-front farmhouses, Frisian stelp farms, head-neck-body farms, Saxon hall houses, a red American barn, an English stone farmhouse, an Alpine chalet, hay barracks, silos, chicken coops, stables and fields with water channels. Put a whole farmyard around it with one choice. Click blocks you have placed to keep track of where you are.

Build tips
- Build the plinth and the corners first, then the walls up to the eaves. Only then the roof, from the eaves to the ridge.
- For a half-hipped or hip roof, mark out the ridge first and stretch a line to each corner. That shows you right away where the hip runs.
- Thatch looks good in Minecraft made with Hay Bales. For tiles, stairs and slabs of red wood or bricks work well.
- A red barn only looks right with white trim: white corners, a white cross on the door and white edges around the windows.
- Water hydrates farmland 4 blocks away. Put a channel every 9 rows and you have no dry ground anywhere. You can walk over a channel if you cover it with a bottom slab or a trapdoor; the land stays hydrated.
- A hay barrack looks best when it is not full: set the roof high and add only a few layers of hay.

Download the design as a schematic file and paste it into your world with WorldEdit, or rebuild it from a hologram in Litematica. Walls, roof, beams and doors get the materials you choose on the left; windows, water, crops and fences have a fixed block.

How it is calculated
History and fun facts
People and animals under one roof
For centuries farmers lived together with their animals in one building. This was warm in winter, and the farmer could keep an eye on the animals. The hay was stored above or next to the stable.
Every region had its own farmhouse shape, depending on the land, the weather, the building materials and the crops.
Farmhouse types in the Netherlands
In the east of the Netherlands stands the Saxon hall house. A large door in one end wall leads to the threshing floor, with stables on both sides. In the past the family lived at the other end around an open fire.
In Brabant and Limburg stands the long front farmhouse: house, stable and barn in a row under one long ridge. In Friesland farmers built the stelp, with a huge pyramid roof over the hay. In Groningen and Friesland the head neck body farm appeared: a house (head), a narrow link (neck) and a large barn (body).
In Holland and Utrecht stands the krukhuis, shaped like a T or an L. In Zeeland the large black barns with a thatched half hip roof are well known.
Haybarns and silos
A Dutch haybarn is a roof on four to six poles. The roof can slide up and down, so the hay always stayed dry, however high the stack was.
In America farmers built tall round silos for animal feed. You often see them next to the red barn.
Farms in other countries
In Pennsylvania and the rest of America the red barn with a gambrel roof is famous. A common explanation for the red colour is that farmers made paint with linseed oil and red iron oxide, which was cheap.
In the Cotswolds in England farmhouses are made of honey coloured limestone. In Tyrol people build chalets with a wide, low roof against the snow and wooden balconies full of flowers.
Where can you still see them?
In the Netherlands Open Air Museum in Arnhem, farmhouses from all over the country have been moved and rebuilt. In the countryside of Twente and Drenthe you still find many real hall houses.
Many old farmhouses are now homes, but the shape with the big door and the long roof still shows what they once were.
Did you know?
- The Netherlands Open Air Museum in Arnhem was founded in 1912.
- In Minecraft, water keeps farmland wet up to 4 blocks away, also diagonally.
- With one water block in the middle of a 9 by 9 field, all the farmland stays wet.
- You recognise a farmer villager in Minecraft by his straw hat. He works at a composter.
- Hay in Minecraft is a hay bale made of nine wheat. Falling on a hay bale hurts much less.
About this tool
This Minecraft farm generator is a library of farmhouses to build layer by layer. You choose from fourteen types: Brabant long front farmhouse, Frisian stelp, head neck body farm, Saxon hall house, T or L shaped krukhuis, Zeeland barn, red American barn, English stone farmhouse, alpine chalet, haybarn, silo, chicken coop, row of stables and a field with ditches.
You set the length, width and wall height. The roof can be a gable roof, half hip roof, hip roof, pyramid roof, gambrel roof or shed roof, with a slope from gentle to very steep. You choose walls of brick, red, white, black tarred wood, spruce, oak, cobblestone, sandstone or mud brick, and a roof of thatch, tiles, slate, shingles or copper.
You add barn doors, windows with shutters, white trim, timber framing, a chimney, a gable ornament, a roof turret with a weather vane, a balcony or a canopy. With Farmyard you place two to four extra buildings around a yard path. A field gets ditches at the right distance and crops such as wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroot, pumpkins and melons.
The top view, front and side views, the layer plan, the 3D preview and the materials counter help you build it. Download the design as a .schem file for WorldEdit or Litematica.
Great if you want to build a Minecraft farm for your survival world or a whole village with farmyards. Also see crop farming and the windmills.
Frequently asked questions
How do I build a nice farmhouse in Minecraft?
Choose an example and build the base and the corners first. Then build the walls up to the eaves, and after that the roof from the eaves to the ridge. Layer 1 is the ground, with the floor, yard path, water and farmland.
How far does water keep farmland wet?
In Minecraft water keeps farmland wet up to 4 blocks away. Put a ditch every 9 rows and no ground stays dry. The tool places the ditches at that distance.
How do I make a thatched roof in Minecraft?
Choose Thatch as the roofing. It is made of hay bales. For roof tiles you can use stairs and slabs of red wood or brick.
Can I make a whole farmyard at once?
Yes. Under Farmyard choose 2, 3 or 4 buildings. The extra buildings stand around a yard path in front of the main building. A different seed number gives you different buildings.
How can I walk over a ditch?
Put a bottom slab or a trapdoor on top. You can then walk across it and the farmland stays wet.
Does this work in Bedrock?
The layer plan works in every version. The .schem file is for Java Edition with WorldEdit or Litematica.
